    A vast array of different battery types is now available to the modeller, and the range is constantly growing larger; the problem is that each battery type requires its "own" charge process. The usual solutions to this are familiar to all of us: either a large number of individual battery chargers, or a universal battery charger - a popular option. Of course, these universal chargers must be set correctly to suit each battery type, and it is necessary to define the cell count, charge current, discharge current etc. manually. It is very easy to lose track of things, forget how to change the settings, or - in the worst case - charge a battery using the wrong settings.

    Which of us hasn`t made this mistake: you need to top up some battery or other in a hurry, you switch the system on with the wrong settings - and in a moment your valuable battery is damaged, or perhaps < even ruined. The revolutionary BID system from robbe now offers an ingenious solution to this problem. BID system stands for Battery IDentification System. A small, lightweight BID chip is assigned to each battery; the chip stores all the relevant data for charging and discharging that pack perfectly.

    When the battery is to be charged or discharged, the BID chip and the battery are connected using a BID battery charger, and the BID system informs the charger of the required parameters. Press the Start button, and the charge or discharge process begins.The special advantages of the BID system are as follows: no tiresome searching through menus for the set-up parameters, maximum protection from mis-handling, and storing of the relevant battery data in the BID chip.

    Since the invention of the Lithium battery the number of different cell types has been rising almost daily. Yesterday we had Lithium-Ion cells with 3.6 Volts, today Lithium-Ion and Lithium-Ion-Polymer types with 3.7 Volts, recently we have seen Lithium-Ferrum cells with 3.3 Volts, and in the pipeline are Lithium-Phosphor cells with 3.6 Volts.

    It is by no means straightforward to keep track of all this, with so many cell types and cut-off voltages.
    It is very easy to forget the type of pack in a model, and also to forget what the settings should be. In a moment the charger is set incorrectly, often with disastrous results. By now most of us have connected a battery for a quick top-up - with the wrong settings - and ended up with a valuable battery which is damaged or even ruined.

    The revolutionary robbe BID system provides an ingenious solution to this problem. The BID key is a small unit which is assigned to an individual battery, and which stores all the important charge parameters for that pack. To charge or discharge the pack all you do is connect it to a BID battery charger; the BID system automatically informs the charger of the correct settings.

    The unit is handled just like the familiar USB memory stick.

    Simply plug the BID key into the charger, and the charge process begins.

    When charging in parallel, it is best to be sure that the batteries being charged are close in overall voltage. Charging multiple batteries that are far out of balance with each other can limit the batteries potential and shorten battery life.
